Trae, while mostly unknown to most of the United States, has been a staple in the Houston rap scene for over a decade. While his fellow third coasters (Lil Flip, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones to name a few) have all become mainstream names, Trae has stayed more or less underground. Maybach Music Group’s first compilation, Self Made is set to drop tomorrow (May 23). “That Way” is a hidden gem that puts out a different sound than the rest of the album. Producer Lex Luger puts down a smooth & soulful underlying beats while Wale leads with sensual lyrics. Rick Ross’ rough edges in the third act adds the perfect depth to the track. To be honest, sometimes I confuse the dude with B.o.B – they both got this alternative edge but are mainstream-pop “but I can still flow” rap personas (not hood, not indie, not club, not stoner).
